delivering RLThe Volunteers pick up the meals, which are in insulated containers, from the kitchen around 11:00 each morning, Monday thru Friday. They deliver the meals according to their route sheets and then return the containers to the kitchen when they are done. This whole process takes 1 - 2 hours.

In addition to receiving a hot meal, our recipients also enjoy some fellowship with our caring Volunteers. Our daily visits help give the families & friends of our recipients peace of mind knowing that their loved ones are safe and sound for another day.

Learn how to become a Meals on Wheels Volunteer

Basically, anyone who is homebound and can't prepare their own meals!

Meals on Wheels of the Sandhills provides a hot, nutritious, diet-specific mid-day meal, Monday through Friday (including weekday holidays), to homebound recipients. A person is eligible to receive meals if they are homebound and unable to have meals prepared or unable to prepare meals for themselves. We have no financial or age restrictions, and we receive no government funding.

Often, individuals who receive meals are referred to us by the Department of Aging & Social Services, FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Home Health Agencies, Doctors, Nurses, Churches and Other Responsible Parties. Most of the time though, our meal deliveries are set up by the recipients themselves or by family members who live far away and are concerned about their loved one.

If you have questions as to whether you or a loved one could begin recieving our meals just CONTACT US.

Our hot meals are prepared daily by dedicated staff in the kitchens at Penick Village Retirement Community in Southern Pines. Our Meals provide 1/3 of the recommended daily allowance and even accommodate for specialized nutritional requirements like diabetic or low sodium meals.

We are a non-profit organization; however, the cost for each meal is $3.25. Payments can be made weekly ($16.25/ per week/per meal) or monthly ($65/per month/per person Monday – Friday) and will be collected by the Volunteer on Fridays or, preferably, can be mailed at the beginning of each month to our office (see address below). Checks made payable to MEALS ON WHEELS OF THE SANDHILLS. Paying monthly is the most beneficial as it is based on 20 days and there is usually 21 or 22 weekdays in a month.
